Description: The exhibition unfolds through an emotional and spatial reading of Mumbai—not as a linear historical narrative, but as a city of constant flux, layered memory, and overlapping identities. Rather than tracing a chronological timeline, it invites visitors to experience the city's essence through its many coexisting realities.
Set within a heritage museum complex near Mumbai’s eastern waterfront, the exhibition inhabits a colonial-era structure that once served as a point of public gathering. This historically resonant space becomes a fitting canvas to reimagine Mumbai as a shared0, collective story.
The curatorial intent was to translate the spirit of the city, its sensory overload, restless movement, vibrant contrasts, and dense textures—into an immersive spatial journey. The exhibition is conceived as a walk-through of distinct yet interconnected zones, each envisioned as a city within the city. The exhibition space is divided into four sections: Mayanagri, City of Opportunity, City of Migrants, and City of Cosmopolitanism, to narrate the historical narrative of Mumbai.
Each zone offers a thematically and visually unique environment, layering archival research with spatial design, material textures, and lived narratives. Together, they form a non-linear but emotionally resonant experience—a mosaic of Mumbai’s complexities, contradictions, and enduring spirit.
