The Literary Map is an interactive digital visualisation that plots 798 acclaimed 20th-21st century literary fiction authors on a globe based on their place of birth. Designed and developed for Hammock Mag, an Indian literary publication known for thematic reading lists, the project emerged from a need to organize their unstructured datasets of writers and book recommendations.

Rather than presenting a narrative or visualisation about global literary trends, we took an experiential approach: users are invited to move around on the globe, apply filters (gender, continent, awards, language, era), search and let patterns emerge. The interface reveals not only who is represented, but who isn’t. Absences on the map surface exclusions in international literary awards through the missing green dots. In this way, the Map becomes more than a writer/book discovery tool: it transforms a dense data set into an experience of both recognition & omission. The result is a tool that balances curiosity and critique delicately; offering users a reckoning with bias in the canon as well as a tool to find their next holiday read. Designed to be fully responsive, the interface adapts seamlessly across devices, with five breakpoints to ensure accessibility & usability.
